![]() “The UFO culture of the 1950s arose after the end of WWII, and rockets, nuclear weapons, and new aircraft were being designed and built based on war effort innovation,” notes Bernard Bates, a professor of astronomy at the University of Puget Sound. The organizations held in common the belief that communication with extraterrestrials was possible and that by channeling their messages (many aliens, believers said, were concerned with the earthlings' attempts to develop a hydrogen bomb) the contactee could ultimately help save mankind. The most infamous of these groups is probably Heaven’s Gate-whose members committed suicide in order to ascend to a spaceship following the Hale-Bopp comet-but there’s also Scientology (founded in 1952), the Universal Articulate Interdimensional Understanding of Science (1954), and the Aetherius Society (1955). The Integratron remains open to visitors today, although it’s no longer outfitted for the purpose of time travel-the machinery is, mysteriously, long gone. Inside, the acoustically perfect sanctuary made of Douglas fir rises three stories high and features sweeping views of the desert from its 16 small windows. It is a 16-sided metal-free building constructed using a technique called joinery-no nails or screws were used in an attempt to avoid interference with the conductive properties of the machine. According to Van Tassel, the site was determined by its relationship to the Great Pyramids in Giza as well as its proximity to magnetic vortices. The white wood-domed structure sits four stories high and 55 feet in diameter, just off Twentynine Palms Highway in Landers, California, about an hour north of Palm Springs. In fact, the story of George Van Tassel’s Integratron, as the machine is known, is so outlandish, so otherworldly, and so enchanting-encompassing UFOs, electromagnetism, Nikola Tesla, Howard Hughes, Moses, and an alleged German spy-that it’s little wonder the site continues to attract tourists, artists, reporters, drifters, and spiritual pilgrims more than 60 years after Van Tassel began to build what would become his life’s work. If it wouldn´t be so far from Europe I would go there again tomorrow. The sign said, “Dedicated to Research in Life Extension.” George Van Tassel, an aviator and UFOlogist, put it outside a structure he described as “a time machine for basic research on rejuvenation, anti-gravity, and time travel” in the Mojave Desert in the early 1950s. Other than workaway experiences I had before in California, this was "f*cking awesome" ) Clem and I became good friends and now Clem from France is helping me building my tiny house in Austria. Lindsey was a very good and patient instructor, we enjoyed working together a lot. Lindsey & AJ create the place of their dreams, building wonderful domes in the middle of beautiful nowhere. The time at Wonder Domes was definitely one of the highlights of my 6 month USA Trip. Bring two 5-gallon jugs in your car - fill them up for free at the Oasis of Mara visitor center on Utah Trail in 29 Palms (water fountain with jug spigot works 24/7) or the vending machine at the FastTrip gas station on Adobe Rd. Stater Bros in 29 Palms is the nearest grocery store, but if you're driving here from LA, San Diego, or Palm Springs, stock up at a Winco near LA or in Indio. (A national parks pass is helpful for getting into Joshua Tree.) Twentynine Palms and Yucca Valley are full-service towns. And when there's no moon you can see so many stars! There are radical high and low desert attractions within a 1-2 hour drive in all directions - mountain hikes, oases, abandoned mines, geological curiosities, sculpture gardens, far-out artists. The land is surrounded by beautiful mountains and the special light conditions of the Mojave desert, make it a stunning place to be at sunrise and sunset and in moonlight. ![]() It can get very hot here and there are sometimes strong winds, but the low humidity means that it's usually cool in the shade even when it's hot in the sun, and cool at night. ![]()
